AGAINST PREJUDICE & DISCRIMINATION CAMPAIGN

What is going on in our country is indeed shocking! It's a fact that the vast majority of South Africans deplore this type of behaviour. The challenge is obviously how to voice our opposition. To accommodate this, we have launched the APD (Against Prejudice & Discrimination) Campaign.

APD Campaign Allows Silent Majority to Be Heard

The APD (Against Prejudice & Discrimination) Campaign of the APD (Association for the Physically Disabled – Greater Johannesburg) and BB (Barrier Breakers) was launched on 21 March 2008, Human Rights Day. This campaign is aimed at providing the unheard majority in South Africa with a voice and enable them to participate in a peaceful, silent protest against any form of discrimination.

During discussion, Simmi Pillay, Human Rights and Disability Coordinator at the South African Human Rights Commission, acknowledged the potential of the campaign and the good work that this initiative can produce.

“There are millions of South Africans opposed to discrimination. Yet it is the thousands over-playing isolated incidents involving only a few individuals who get all the media attention and so distort perceptions around racial tension in South Africa, not only in our country, but globally,” said Jeanette Maclean, APD Corporate Communications Manager and CEO of BB, during the launch.

"We have obviously forgotten what Nelson Mandela said: Never, never, never again shall it be that this beautiful land will again experience the oppression of one by another and suffer the indignity of being the skunk of the world.”

The campaign modus operandi, which is being assisted by the media and large corporations/organisations, involves the distribution of buttons and posters (examples of which appear below) displaying the message: AGAINST PREJUDICE & DISCRIMINATION.

The distribution of the buttons (above left) takes place at consenting organisations/companies. The buttons are either bought by the employer and supplied free of charge to employees, or else employees are asked to buy their own at only R10 each. Participating employers are encouraged to purchase and display the "Stop Sign"-posters (above right) at all entrances and/or reception areas of the company and individuals to wear their buttons every Friday. To personalise the campaign for them, companies have their own branding on the products (above we have used BB as an example).

All monies raised during this campaign is in aid of people with disabilities and is administered by the APD, an organisation which has first hand knowledge of the discrimination people with disabilities have been experiencing over the last seven decades.
